Marking of matric exams

I was involved with marking the WCED matric exam papers where many of the markers came from places as far away as Knysna, Mossel Bay and Heidelberg. The day following the marking I set off driving to Mossel Bay and as I drove the long road I wondered at people going from so far away all the way to a marking centre to mark. I salute all the markers, those from near and far!

Hi!
I am very interested in marking matric exams in 2012. Can you give me some more information on how to go about doing that?

thanx!

Each province usually advertises in provincial educational media for markers. If you are at a school, have enough years experience teaching Gr 12, and your marks are over a certain minimum, then you should be able to get a position as a marker.

When my application for becoming a marker was rejected, I asked but why? Apparenty I didn't have the qualification to mark: the 2005 holiday courses. That year I was stillm in fultime science teaching, so I did my cource in that field - not CAT & IT. It is very sad - for i see myself as a very good C& IT teacher.

I think very few CAT teachers have the 'correct' qualifications, very few have CAT at university level. I have lectured CAT but myself have no qualifications in CAT. Do not take it personally not you do not have the qualifications to mark. The people who check the applications probably have difficulty judging who to select as they do not understand the lack of available university courses. You probably did not get to mark because you did not comply with some tiny aspect of the application, which the selectors could recognise as not correct. I do not have the correct qualifications for a senior job in my province, and see my qualifications (BA, B.Bibl. (Hons), M.Ed. (CIE) Cum Laude, PhD, Advanced ICDL.)
Continue teaching CAT and IT, give your best, it is a great subject!

CAT is probably one of the most useful subjects offered. It's great that learners can go to tertiary education but at all levels CAT has proved its value. We are all continually learning and becoming better teachers in the subject. It is not easy as it's a learning area that is continually changing.

Many of the markers we appointed this year were appointed with just something like an ICDL certificate behind their name (including of course their normal education degree/diploma/etc.) and some years experience in teaching CAT. I don't know about other provinces, but we have MANY teachers that are GREAT but couldn't be appointed due to no IT qualifications. I recommended they just go and write the ICDL exams (I mean how difficult can it be?), to at least have something to back up their experience.
