Gr 12 PAT - Phase 2

I have almost finished marking Phase 2 of the PAT.
  1. I would say 3/4 of my learners have not shown or indicated how they can use Word, Access or Excel to solve the problem in their PAT. In future I think the rubric needs a special feature, similar to the Internet search feature, on retrieving information from processing data in Word, Access and Excel.
  2. Many learners will not be able to get the answers to their questions in the sources/places they listed as they are not aligned.
  3. A few of the learners had nice Survey features. In future I think the rubric needs a special feature, similar to the Internet search feature, on retrieving information from a Survey.
So much teaching is still required!

dankie

We are looking at similar problems. I am firmly believe that we are bearing the fruits of this ‘silly mass-produced’ projects that the pupils have been producing throughout their school careers in other subjects where completely copy-and-paste projects where no critical thinking seems to warrant ‘good’ marks.

It is also clear that learners have little or no idea of how to use any other ‘resources' other than ‘Google’.

I think the PAT can be simplified but in our first year, it is probably needs to be more 'definitive' so as to to maintain standards across the provinces. Everyone can make input on the PAT, so lets all make our voices heard!

Iit is not that the PAT is too difficult, it is the fact that no one ever bothered teaching our leaners how to do research - all they were 'taught' was to search or 'Google'- hence the 'mess' I referred to earlier.

I found that that one can download articles / websites so that leaners can work off-line without spoon-feeding them - much like teachers put aside recommended reading in the library in our days.

Best wishes
PAT
