Designated subjects

Why is CAT not recognised as one of the ‘designated’ subjects for university? Have a look at the official list of designated subjects. http://www.hesa-enrol.ac.za/nishe/faqs.htm
We have spoken about this before, and not had the answers we believe are correct.
We must get our PARENTS and PRINCIPALS to write to the Higher Education South Africa (HESA) board to relook at and revise the subjects required to get access to universities. Their web site is http://www.hesa.org.za/hesa/
WHEN is HESA going to relook at and revise the ‘designated’ subjects required to get access to universities? After the election?
Information management is what we teach! University students need information management.

"Remember four (4) subjects have to be taken from the designated list for admission to degree studies. This still leaves two subjects (excluding Life Orientation) to make up the seven subjects required for a National Senior Certificate. So it is possible to choose two subjects that are not on the designated list."

Remember, CAT can not be disregarded for the 'P' or 'M' score when applying to a tertiary institution.

Since it is possible to get a high mark for CAT, it can only benifit the student regarding admission, because he or she will have a higher score as opposed to a subject like eg. Life Sciences.

The thing is most of the decisions are made by people who were at school 15 or 20 years ago or never at all. That is why we find ourselves stuck with problems from the top gurus as if they are the "know-all".

I think it's high time decisions about subjects are made by teachers and all these people do is to sign as they are good at that and get their salaries to produce gazzettes.

I wish we can be respected as teachers not as garden boys taking weeds out of the fenced garden.

Thanks

Where can one study to become a QUALIFIED CAT Teacher? Does any university offer a FET Teachers course where one can for example combine CAT and EGD as your 2 teaching subjects? There is such a shortage of CAT teachers, but nowhere to go to become one?

Unisa is offering CAT as a subject when you do a BEd degree. Two of the subjects that are included for this subject are "Human computer interaction" and "ICDL Vista".

The problem is that until CAT is added as a designated subject - it will be seen as poorer cousin to many other subjects. As CAT teachers we see the difficulties of the subject, the intricacies and how much is actually required of learners. It should never have been allowed to get to this point and urgent rectification of this is needed. I know of schools that won't offer CAT because it's not on the designated list. Such a pity, as it is the one subject that learners will use in other learning areas and beyond

The first comment is spot on.
Read more about this on the CAT learning space on Thutong: http://www.thutong.org.za/forums/t/220.aspx

While I fully agree with Anonymous #1 and Carina, the fact that CAT is not a designated subject does create a "perception" amongst parents and some school management that CAT must be for those who are not wanting to study further. This is most unfortunate. The tertiary institutions need to sit down and study the CAT curriculum and realise that it is neither Comp Studies SG nor Computyping but and altogether more demanding subject.

Cat is only subject where you work 3x harder than most, you don't just work through one text book you work through 3 of them. Your Pat is a self research portfolio and requires alot of research and, Time and effort to complete. Not only that, CAT is a extremely up to date subject and gets updated regularly, skills learnt from Cat can also be used in 80% of most work environments
